Palatinate

A famous wine region.

The Palatinate is a most scenic and historically interesting wine growing region in Germany. Old villages - many of them were founded more than a thousand years ago - are scattered among gentle hills of vineyards and orchards. A prominent feature of the Palatinate is the German Wine Route, which is the oldest wine route in the world.

The microclimate in the area is outstanding. The vineyards are located on the eastern slope of the Palatinate Forest, on the western edge of the Rhine Valley. The vineyards are well protected from westerly winds and rain. The number of sunshine hours is extremely high and the annual rainfall has an average of only 550ml per year. All these criteria lead to an exceptionally warm and dry climate, which is ideal for grape maturing.

In this lovely region, in the 1300 years old village of Edesheim, Paul Thiery, Baron von Holbach was born in 1723. His mother grew up in Speyer, which is well known for it´s unique "Dom" (cathedral). From the vineyards around Edesheim you can catch a glimpse of the famous Hambach Castle.
